🌤️ Weather & Dew Risk Tool

Will rain or dew affect today's match? Check every IPL venue instantly.

📚 What is the Dew Factor in Cricket?

Dew is moisture that settles on the cricket outfield and pitch during evening matches — especially in India's humid climate. When dew is present, the ball becomes wet and heavier, making it very hard for bowlers to grip and swing the ball effectively.

This is why teams in IPL often prefer to bowl first when high dew is expected — so they bat in the second innings when the outfield is dewy and scoring becomes easier.

🟢
Low Dew Risk

Humidity <60%. Bowlers retain grip. Batting or bowling first both viable. Conditions balanced.

🟡
Medium Dew Risk

Humidity 60–75%. Spinners may struggle late. Slight edge to teams batting second.

🔴
High Dew Risk

Humidity >75%. Ball becomes slippery. Strong toss advantage — bowl first strongly advised.

🌧️ How Rain Affects IPL Matches

Match Delay

If rain stops play before 5 overs are bowled in T20, no result is possible. Matches can be delayed up to 90 minutes before being reduced or abandoned.

📉
DLS Method

Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method is used when matches are interrupted. If Team 1 scored 180 in 20 overs but rain comes in Team 2's chase, DLS recalculates their target based on overs available.

🔄
Reserve Day (Playoffs)

IPL Qualifier and Eliminator matches have a reserve day. If weather prevents a result on the scheduled day, the match continues the following day from where it stopped.

Weather Questions — Answered

Will it rain during today's IPL match?

Select your match venue above to see real-time weather conditions including rain probability. Rain chances below 15% rarely cause match interruptions. Above 40%, expect delays. We update our venue weather data every 3 hours before match time.

Which IPL venue has the highest dew factor?

Eden Gardens in Kolkata and M Chinnaswamy in Bengaluru consistently have the highest dew factor in IPL. Both are humid cities where evening moisture settles heavily on the outfield. Teams should almost always consider bowling first at these two venues in night matches.

Does dew affect spin bowling in cricket?

Yes, significantly. Dew makes the ball wet and heavy, which prevents spinners from generating turn or drift. Wrist spinners like leg-break bowlers are worst affected. This is why teams often save their spinners for the first innings (when the outfield is dry) if high dew is expected.

How do I know if there will be dew in tonight's IPL match?

Key indicators of high dew: humidity above 75%, cloud cover above 60%, wind speeds below 15 km/h, and temperature dropping after sunset. Our dew risk tool above combines all these factors for each IPL venue to give you a simple Low/Medium/High risk rating.

Can rain cause an IPL match to be abandoned?

Yes. In T20 cricket, a minimum of 5 overs must be completed for a result to be declared. If rain prevents even 5 overs from being bowled, the match is abandoned. During the IPL league stage, abandoned matches are shared as 1 point each. Playoff matches have a reserve day.
